Welcome

Alex The Red Parez aka El Rojo has been bringing acoustic rock and old-time country to the Washington DC Metro Area since 2006. Whether performing original music or classic material, Alex’s voice is “reminiscent of Johnny Cash, though often sung with Jello Biafra’s inflection” (Matthew Stabley, NBCWashington.com) and “sounds like Nick Cave reinterpreting the early songbook of Bill Callahan” (The Big Easy - MetroMusicScence.com). “El Rojo” to his friends, Parez takes inspiration from epic troubadours Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and local balladeer John Bustine amongst various other artists. In trio mode, Alex is flanked by accomplished harmonica sideman Terry Boes and prolific bassist Derek Evry who is also a fantastic songwriter, singer, guitarist and band leader. Alex has also performed with several other local musicians for various tribute shows.

Ian Mabley - guitar, vocals Chris Sciotto - bass, vocals

"A Shrewdness of Apes started off with the collaboration of Ian Mabley and Dave Greek as an acoustic duo in late 2012. With the incorporation of their first drummer, Cesar Cotrina, in mid-2013, they named themselves after the collective noun for monkeys, which they thought represented their intricate, melodic yet heavy style.

With a cycling array of drummers, they released their first EP (Alpha) in March 2014. Ian moved to DC in October 2014 during the production of the band's second EP (Beta) and released it in January 2015. Sumeet Mahal, Ian's longtime friend, was recruited to play bass later that year. The band existed as a duo acoustic group until they recruited Jared Coffin to play drums in February 2017.

Their first full-length album was recorded in Fall 2018. Jared left the band that winter, claiming that his music tastes were changing and no longer aligned with A Shrewdness of Apes's sound. Sumeet was also replaced by Chris Sciotto in early 2019.

The full-length album is expected to be released in May 2019."
